Monett advances to Carl Junction Tournament championship game

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Sean Goostree stopped Carthage on four hits through six innings as Monett advanced to the championship game with an 8-0 victory Saturday in the Carl Junction Post 781 AAA American Legion Tournament.

Goostree, a right-hander from Wheaton, walked three and struck out six. He stranded Carthage runners in scoring position in five of the six innings. Nick Childress pitched the seventh inning.

“We have 17 kids from six schools. The kids weren’t used to playing together,” said Monett head coach Michael Calhoun. “We’ve won four in a row now. I was very happy with their discipline in the field and at the plate.”

Monett will play Carl Junction at 5:30 p.m. today. McDonald County will face Carl Junction in the first game at 11 a.m., followed by Webb City and Joplin at 1:15 p.m. and Carthage and Hillcrest at 3:30 p.m.

Hillcrest defeated Joplin 12-8 in Saturday’s first game. Monett defeated McDonald County 13-2 in the first of back-to-back games, and Webb City knocked off McDonald County 11-1.

Goostree and Carthage starter Zack Overton each pitched three shutout innings until Monett broke through for four runs in the fourth inning.

First baseman Josh Steward, who was 2-for-4 and scored two runs, led off with a single to left. Kyle Robbins walked and Nick Childress drove in Steward with a single to center. Garron Cantrell singled in Robbins, and Pate Powell drove in Childress with a single to right.

Carthage right fielder Jonathan Terry prevented another run from scoring on the play when he threw out Tyler Musick at the plate. Monett’s fourth run scored on an error.

Steward’s bases-loaded double to left-center field drove in two of Monett’s four runs in the seventh inning. The other two runs scored on a wild pitch and an error.

Carthage leadoff batter Keaton Giett was 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base but was left stranded at third base three times.

Webb City’s Kyler Crane pitched a five-inning complete game against McDonald County. He allowed six hits, walked two and struck out five.

“He did a great job. That was something we haven’t had this summer,” said Webb City head coach Chris Taylor.

Maquel Harbin, Devin Pickett, Klay James and Gunnar Friend had two hits for Webb City, and Harbin, Andrew McDaniel, Friend and Trenton Moeller scored two runs. James, who played shortstop, had a double and three RBIs.

“We have several guys on vacation, so we’re a little short on numbers this summer and we’re pretty young,” Taylor said. “Today we broke loose a little bit. We’re just trying to get better, and to have a good outing like that was a confidence builder.”
