Evan Wood certainly made the most of his first appearance in the Joplin Globe City Championship.
Wood withstood two double bogeys late in the final round and won the tournament by one stroke.
Wood returns this year to defend his crown as the 38th men’s city championship begins its three-day run at 10 a.m. today at Briarbrook Golf Course.
This is also the second year that the tournament includes a senior’s division, and Jim Lucas is back as the defending champion.
The second round will be played Sunday at Schifferdecker Municipal Golf Course, and the final round is May 12 at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club.
Briarbrook, Twin Hills and the Joplin Golf Club will field 10-man teams in both divisions. Everyone will compete for individual honors, and the top five scores each round are used to determine team totals.
The Joplin Golf Club halted a 15-year victory drought by winning last year’s title with a 1,130 total, followed by Twin Hills with 1,148 and Briarbrook 1,169.
Briarbrook claimed the inaugural senior’s team title with 1,125, and Twin Hills and JGC each shot 1,164.
Wood carded a 69 at Schifferdecker, 75 at Twin Hills and 77 at Briarbrook for a 221 total to finish one shot ahead of Mark Riley and two in front of Kyle Long.
Wood birdied the 12th and 13th holes during the final round to take the lead for keeps. Riley climbed into second place with a final-round 74.
Lucas’ title came on his 64th birthday, and he erased a two-shot deficit with an eagle-3 on No. 15 and birdie-2 on 16. His 3-wood second shot on 15 stopped 30 feet from the pin, and he sank a 20-foot birdie on 16. Lucas’ total of 219 had 71s at Schifferdecker and Briarbrook sandwiched around a 77 at Twin Hills.
Paul Ashe, who had a two-shot lead before Lucas went 3-2 on 15 and 16, wound up second with 220, and Bob McKay, Tim Old and Dave Tourtelot shared third at 226.
