Two juco transfers join MSSU men's basketball team

Wendell Pelts and R.J. Leverette, two junior college transfers, have signed national letters-of-intent to continue their basketball careers at Missouri Southern.

Pelts, 6-foot-5 swingman from Madison, Wis., averaged 10.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.0 steals in 29 games last season at Iowa Lakes Community College. He shot 43 percent from the floor, 39 percent from 3-point range and was a first team all-region selection.

“We like Wendell’s versatility in that he can play on the perimeter or with his back to the basket,” Lions coach Robert Corn said in a press release. “He has a chance to become a very good defender, and we expect him to bring some maturity to our program. Wendell is a good addition to our program.”

Leverette, 6-0 guard from Kansas City, played one season at Sheridan (Wyo.) College and averaged 9.7 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 22 games.

As a senior in high school, he helped Grandview advance to the state championship game while averaging 19.2 points, 6.3 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 2.9 steals. He was named Suburban Conference Blue Division player of the year.

“We recruited R.J. out of high school, so we are really pleased with his decision to come to Missouri Southern,” Corn said. “He is the point guard we wanted. He has good quickness and the ability to get by defenders and make good decisions. He will have a very good career for us at Missouri Southern.”
