Solid rounds give Taylor lead in Senior City Championship

Les Taylor’s game has come arund.

Not only has he been shootng in the high 60s on his home course, Briarbrook Golf Club, in the last week week or so, according to some of his friends, but he put together a pair of 69s in the opening ronds of the Joplin Globe Senior City Championship over the weekend.

The 69s, including one in the first round at Briarbrook on Saturday, has given him a four-shot lead over last year’s champion, Jim Lucas. Bob McKay of Twin Hills and Dave Tourtelot of Briarbrook are six shots back.

“I haven’t made any changes in my game over the last two years,” Taylor said. “The game of golf is always mental. You’ve got to keep a good attitude, enjoy the company and play one shot at a time.”

Whatever the reason for his superlative play, Taylor isn’t going to do any deep analysis. “I’m pleased,” he said.

Taylor hit 10 fairways and 10 greens and “I didn’t putt that badly,” he said of his round Sunday. He drove to within 15 yards of the par four 16th and to within 40 yards of the 17th, topping off good approaches with birdie putts.

He capped off the round with another birdie at the par five 18th.

The day’s best round, a 67, was turned in by Lucas. He won’t be able to play in next Saturday’s final round at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club because of a previous committment.

McKay, a former city champion, also carded a 69 on Sunday. The only other round in the 60s was turned in by Mark Riley of the Joplin Golf Club. He had a 68.

Briarbrook has 30-shot lead in the team competition with a 721 total for two rounds. Twin Hills is next at 751 and the Joplin Golf Club is seven shots back.

A note: Mike Maier started Sunday’s round by hitting his tee shot out of bounds and then smacking his second into the pond on he right of the fairway. Maier made a 25-foot putt for a seven.

He wound up shooting a two over par 73. His score wound up being one of the five used by the Joplin Golf Club in the team competition.
