CHANUTE, Kan. —
Shawnee Heights upended Joplin 51-39 Thursday afternoon in the opening game of the annual Ralph Miller Classic at Chanute High School.
The Eagles rallied from a 24-18 halftime deficit to a 27-27 tie in the third period before Shawnee Heights regained control.
“They are very athletic and a quick team,” Joplin coach Jeff Williams said. “We had a tough time containing the ball at times. That was a big difference.
“I thought we played very flat. I don’t have an answer, but we did not play very well.”
Charlie Brown led Joplin with 13 points, and Adam St. Peter and Abe Hueller added nine and seven, respectively.
Joplin plays Olathe North in a consolation bracket game at 3 p.m. today.
SARCOXIE, Mo. — Exeter defeated College Heights Christian 47-29 and Sarcoxie handled the Mount Vernon junior varsity 56-15 in the boys round robin portion of the annual tournament.
Today’s girls pool games are McAuley Catholic vs. Riverton at 5 p.m. and Exeter vs. Jasper at 6:30.
Austin Johnson scored 16 points and Colten Stringer 14 to pace the Exeter boys. The Tigers were ahead 26-13 by halftime.
Josh Woodmansee had four treys among 18 points for the Cougars.
Sarcoxie led Mount Vernon 35-7 at halftime.
Garett Triplett scored 16 and Justin Myers 10 for the Bears.
