Thomas Wilson’s double in the top of the ninth inning drove in Tee Helsel with the winning run Monday in Missouri Southern’s 8-7 victory against Lindenwood.
The Lions (5-2, 1-2 MIAA) took a 7-3 lead with a five-run fourth inning, but Lindenwood answered with two runs in the sixth inning and one run each in the seventh and eighth innings.
Helsel reached on an error with one out in the ninth inning just before Wilson, who was 3-for-4, drove in his third run of the game with a double.
MSSU’s Sam Ryan was 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs, Mitchell Osburn was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Helsel was 2-for-4 and scored two runs.
The Lions took a 2-1 lead in the second inning on an RBI double by Osburn and Wilson’s run-scoring single.
After Lindenwood scored twice in the bottom of the second, the Lions scored five runs in the fourth inning on RBI singles by Wilson and Michael McCoy, a two-run double by Ryan and a run-scoring ground ball by Nick Doughty.
Bo Bergen (1-0), who entered game in the eighth inning, was the winning pitcher. MSSU starter Ryan Bates allowed eight hits and two walks before he was relieved by Stephen Vaughn in the seventh inning. Drew Noble pitched the ninth inning and picked up his first save.
The Lions are scheduled to play their home opener at 2 p.m. Friday against Nebraska-Omaha at Joe Becker Stadium.
