CARTHAGE, Mo. —
Payton Walker pitched a no-hitter against Joplin in a 3-0 Carl Junction victory Thursday in the Carthage-Roper American Legion Baseball Tournament.
Walker, a left-hander, walked four and struck out seven, one in each inning.
“He made two spectacular plays with his glove, too,” said Joplin head coach Bobby Stackhouse. “One was on a line drive, and one was on a hot-shot grounder.”
The tournament was behind schedule because of wet grounds Thursday afternoon. Carl Junction defeated Pittsburg 4-0 in the first game, and Joplin defeated Pittsburg 5-0.
Carthage’s game against Monett was postponed.
Joplin, 13-9, will play McDonald County at noon Saturday.
Carl Junction took a 1-0 lead in the second inning against Joplin on an RBI single by Jaren Hulette that scored Nathan Skaggs, who reached on a one-out single and moved to second on a wild pitch.
The Bulldogs added a pair of runs in the third inning on Josh Petty’s bases-loaded walk, followed by a double play that allowed Nathan Doyle to score.
Joplin’s Caleb Garton pitched a three-hit complete game in the loss. He walked seven and struck out one.
Tristan Ash tossed a five-hit shutout against Pittsburg on 78 pitches. He walked none, struck out two and had an RBI.
“That’s the best he has pitched all summer,” Stackhouse said.
“He had good command of his pitches and we made plays behind him.”
Brett Graham was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, Gavin Jones was 2-for-4 and Josh Miller was 2-for-3.
Joplin took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on an error with two outs, followed by Graham’s run-scoring single.
The Miners added a run in the fifth on a leadoff single by Gavin Jones, who advanced to second on an error and scored when Ash hit into a fielder’s choice.
Joplin added two runs in the seventh. Bryce Ash led off with a walk, went to third on a single by Jones and scored on Graham’s sacrifice fly. Jones later scored on an error.
