HAYS, Kan. —
A three-run sixth inning helped Pittsburg Post 64 beat Arkansas City 8-5 in the Kansas Triple A American Legion Tournament on Thursday night at Hays.
Pittsburg advanced in the winners’ bracket to face Hays today at 5 p.m.
“It was a tough game,” Pittsburg coach Mike Watt said. “There was nothing easy about it.”
Post 64 struggled early with some errors on defense, helping Arkansas City take a 4-3 lead after five innings. Pittsburg also stranded five runners in scoring position over the first five innings.
Doubles by Blake Vail and Colton Gilbert helped Pittsburg plate three runs in the bottom of the sixth and break the game open.
Christian Cedeno was 3-for-4 with an RBI while Nate Grimaldi was 2-for-3 with four runs scored, three stolen bases and two RBI.
Nicholas George earned the win, allowing five hits over seven innings.
Arkansas City threatened in the top of the ninth, loading the bases before Pittsburg relief pitcher Luke Marquardt closed the door with a fly out.
Marquardt is expected to pitch today against Hays.
If Pittsburg wins today, it will play at 3 p.m. Saturday in the championship. If Pittsburg loses, it will play an noon Saturday in the losers’ bracket.
