Lamar favored in Legion district AA tournament

From staff reports

MONETT, Mo. — The Lamar Southwest Tigers are the No. 1 American Legion baseball seed for the Missouri District 15 AA Tournament.

Webb City Post 322, Carl Junction Post 781 and the Joplin Miners are seeded second through fourth for the double-elimination tourney opening Tuesday with four games.

Charlie Long, the District 15 baseball chairman and a Missouri commissioner, said Webb City drew No. 2 after tying with Carl Junction. Monett Post 91’s Michael Calhoun will serve as tourney director.

The schedule on Tuesday is Lamar vs. Monett at 11 a.m., Webb City vs. Cassville Post 118 at 1:30 p.m., Joplin vs. McDonald County Post 392 at 4 and Carl Junction vs. the Carthage Merchants at 6:30.

The Southwest Tigers, coached by Jay Stahl, were unbeaten during the District 15 regular season.

Games are scheduled for seven innings, Long said, and the 10-run lead after five innings will be invoked.

The championship could be decided at 4 p.m. Saturday if the weather cooperates, Long said. Another game, if necessary, will follow.

The champion advances to the five-team Zone 3 at Carl Junction. Post 781 and district champions 6, 16 and 17 will complete that field.

The Joplin Sports Authority and the Joplin Miners will host the state finals at Joe Becker Stadium.

Wednesday’s schedule also will have four games starting at 11 a.m., Long said. Starting time on Thursday and Friday is 1:30 p.m. and 4, respectively.

Admission prices are $4 and $2, Long said. There is no charge for 12-and-under.
