Missouri Southern softball splits in Eight-State Classic

Swadley’s big afternoon powers Lions in second game

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Second baseman Brooke Swadley doubled, homered and drove in two runs as Missouri Southern defeated Southwestern Oklahoma 7-2 on Sunday in the Eight-State Classic at Memorial Park.

William Jewell defeated the Lions 6-1 in Sunday’s first game.

Shelby Romines had two hits against Southwestern Oklahoma, including a second-inning double, and drove in a run with a single in the fifth inning.

The Lions led 4-2 in the fifth when Jessica Castoe doubled and scored on two passed balls.

Michala Wood was hit by a pitch and Brooklyn Farrell walked before Romines’ single drove in Wood. Farrell later scored on a passed ball.

MSSU tied the score with a run in the second inning on doubles by Romines and Swadley then added two runs in the third on a single by Alena Hester, an RBI double by Grass and Farrell’s two-out single. Swadley’s solo home run to left field in the fourth gave the Lions a 4-1 lead.

MSSU (2-4) will face Drury in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday at Missouri Southern.

In the first game, Missouri Southern took a 1-0 first-inning lead on consecutive one-out singles by Swadley, Romines, Grass and Alexah Replogle. Grass and Farrell were 2-for-3.

William Jewell, which outhit the Lions 9-8, scored twice in the third inning and took a 5-1 lead on Annali Dolman’s three-run home run in the fourth.
