Joplin junior Jeremy Lynn won the singles portion of the MSHSAA Class 2 District 12 Individual Championships on Thursday.
Top-seeded Lynn, 25-1, beat second-seeded Alex Ledger of Springfield Central 6-1, 6-0 at the Joplin Athletic Complex.
Central, however, earned the doubles crown at the expense of Joplin as second-seeded Ryan Bunselmeyer-Devin Cavero beat the Eagles’ favored Luke Frogge-Edran Ali 6-4, 6-2.
The top two finishers in each division advance to individual sectional play at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at the Joplin Athletic Complex.
Their opponents will be from District 11 in Springfield. Lynn, for example, will play the runner-up from that district. The winners on Tuesday advance to the state tournament.
Said Joplin coach Sean McWilliams: “Jeremy (Lynn) played very well. He was focused and that’s reflected in the scores. He beat a good Central player for the championship.
“Luke (Frogge) and Edran (Ali), both sophomores, also played well in reaching the finals,” McWilliams said. “They lost to a very strong Central team in the finals. I look for them (Frogge-Ali) to bounce back and work hard.”
Bunselmeyer and Cavero beat Joplin’s Andrew Roberts and Duncan Ford in the semifinals. Frogge-Ali, 14-2 overall, hurdled Neosho’s Mike Kramer-Jeremiah Jennings.
In singles semifinals, Lynn defeated Webb City’s Adam Miller and Ledger beat Joplin’s Brooks Butler.
Nine straight for Cavaliers
Thomas Jefferson defeated Mount Vernon 5-2 Thursday afternoon to give the Cavaliers their ninth consecutive Class 1 boys tennis district championship.
The Cavaliers advance to sectional play on May 19 at Bolivar.
Thomas Jefferson also is the host for the individual district tournament on Saturday, starting at 8:30 a.m. Singles matches will be played at the Millennium Tennis and Fitness Club, and doubles matches will be held on the Thomas Jefferson courts.
The Cavs led Mount Vernon 4-2 after nail-biting singles competition that saw five of the six matches go three sets. Jake Hockman’s 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles was the lone match that went straight sets.
Alex Oserowsky, Frankie Cascone and John Burnett also won their singles matches for Thomas Jefferson. Oserowsky-Hockman then won the No. 1 doubles match in straight sets to secure the match-clinching point.
Mount Vernon’s points went to Brett Dorrance at No. 3 singles and Ezra Emerson at No. 6.

Joplin 5, Nixa 3
NIXA, Mo. — Joplin used five pitchers and snapped a 3-3 tie with two runs in the fifth inning to finish the regular season with a victory.
The Eagles (13-12), seeded third, face Carthage at 6:30 on Saturday night in the first round of the Class 4 District 12 Tournament at Republic.
Dayton Whitehead, who had three hits, reached on a one-out infield single to ignite the Eagles in the fifth inning.
Brett Graham followed with a tie-breaking double and continued to third base on the throw home. Graham then scored on Adam St. Peter’s ground-out.
Kaelin Smith, a sophomore, picked up the win for the pitching decision for the Eagles and fellow right-hander Keith Simpson, a senior, notched the save.
Joplin coach Kirk Harryman used three more right-handers in the nonconference win — senior starter Cole Lawver, sophomore Tyler Fancher and junior Graham.
Soccer
Carl Junction sets record
OZARK, Mo. — Carl Junction set a school record with its 16th victory of the season in a 1-0 decision against Ozark.
Kelsey Swarens scored an unassisted goal midway through the second half as Carl Junction achieved the highest victory total in the soccer program’s four-year history. Each team had eight shots on goal.
