NEOSHO, Mo. —
Kaily Harvey’s third pitching gem in as many days led the Crowder College softball team to the NJCAA Division I Region XVI championship on Sunday with a 5-1 win over Three Rivers.
The win moves the Lady Riders (42-16) into the district round, where they will face the Iowa winner in a best-of-three series to determine a qualifier for the World Series.
That series will begin on Friday at Crowder College, though definite times have not been set.
Harvey was again dominant on Sunday, holding Three Rivers to just one run — which came thanks to a lead-off walk and a Taylor Williams triple in the seventh — on two hits.
She struck out three while holding the top five spots in the lineup to just one hit in 14 plate appearances.
“Three Rivers has a couple of really good slap hitter who can do damage if they get on base and they were 0-for-6 against Kaily, which was huge,” Crowder coach Lori Videmschek said. “She was good all weekend for us.”
Harvey finished the three-game tournament having allowed just two runs on five hits, including a six-inning no-hitter on Friday.
Crowder took a 2-0 lead in the third when Jessica Neely drove a 2-2 pitch over the left-field wall for a solo home run before Brooke Hulsey and Carson Forge added back-to-back two-out doubles.
Neely and Shelby stuck led off the fifth with back-to-back first-pitch triples, spurring a three-run outburst that also included back-to-back doubles from Morgan Coleman and Nevada Campos.
Kayla Crisp added the defensive gem of the day when she ran down a fly ball in right field to snuff out a potential Three Rivers rally.
“This was a big win for us,” Videmschek said. “We had different girls step up or us all weekend. Everyone was involved.”
Neely, Hulsey, Forge, Campos, Harvey and Coleman were all named to the All-Region first team. Jessica Wirzberg earned second-team honors.
