Natalie Bird, the two-time defending champion, made one step toward a three-peat on Saturday in the Greater Joplin Women’s Golf City Championship.
Bird, playing on her home course of Briarbrook Golf Course, carded a 3-over-par 75 in the first round to open a 10-stroke advantage. Bird was 1-over before taking double bogey on the par-4 finishing hole.
Leigh Ann Hackney was second with 85, followed by Kerry Helton and Jill West with 87, Missy Little with 88, Deb McFarland with 89 and Jo Poyzer with 90.
Cheryl Barley topped the low net division with a 69, followed by Betty Moss with 73, Jan Rose with 74 and Barb Schmidt with 80.
Tee times begin at noon for today’s second round at Schifferdecker Municipal Golf Course.
