Rain pushes Legion tournaments back

Rain postponed all the American Legion baseball action Friday in southwest Missouri — the AAA Zone 3 Tournament in Springfield and the AA state tournament in Joplin.

Both tournaments pushed their schedules back one day, and they are now scheduled to finish on Sunday.

In the AAA zone at Dick Birmingham Field on the Hillcrest High School campus, the Joplin Miners (34-6) will play Hillcrest (16-24) in the winners’ bracket final today at noon.

The Joplin-Hillcrest winner moves into Sunday’s championship round, which starts at noon. The loser will play Warrensburg (27-6) today at 3 p.m. to determine the second championship game participant.

The zone winner advances to the state tournament on Aug. 1-3 in Sedalia.

The AA state meet at Joe Becker Stadium has adjusted its time schedule for the weekend. Today’s three-game session begins at noon — one hour earlier than originally scheduled — and Sunday’s championship round has been moved up two hours to 10 a.m.

Glendale (28-14) and Ste. Genevieve (25-1) collide in the winners’ bracket final today at noon. It will be followed by two elimination games — Blue Springs (30-17) vs. Washington (30-3) at 2:30 p.m. and the Glendale-Ste. Genevieve loser vs. the Blue Springs-Washington winner at 5.
