Blue Springs, Ste. Genevieve to decide AA state title

Blue Springs Post 499/Fike advanced to the championship game of the Double A American Legion state tournament by winning two games Saturday at Joe Becker Stadium.

Pitchers Andrew Olsen and Victor Schofield allowed a total of 10 hits in 12 innings as Blue Springs defeated Washington Post 218 7-1 and Springfield Glendale 11-0 in five innings.

Blue Springs will face Ste. Genevieve Post 150 for the championship at 10 a.m. today. A second game, if necessary, will follow.

Ste. Genevieve’s Blake Meyer pitched a no-hitter as Post 150 defeated Glendale 2-1 in the winners’ bracket final. Meyer walked two, struck out six and threw 78 pitches.

Ste. Genevieve right fielder Bryant Vessell’s two-run single in the third inning was the game-winning hit and drove in catcher Tyler Shuh and first baseman Daniel Bergtholdt. Glendale scored its run on a walk, stolen base and two wild pitches.

Blue Springs then defeated Washington and advanced to the losers’ bracket final against Glendale. Shortstop Zachary Ehlen was 3-for-4 and scored two runs, and Olsen, William Meyer and Kaleb Salmon each had two hits. Washington’s Ross Seitter was 2-for-4.

“Andrew Olsen is probably our most consistent pitcher all year long,” said Blue Springs head coach Stacy Messner. “We manufactured some runs with small ball and got some key hits with runners in scoring position.”

Against Glendale, Blue Springs took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on back-to-back RBI singles by Olsen and Blake Roberts after walks to Sawyer Warren and Ehlen. Blue Springs added nine runs on six hits in the fifth inning.

Blue Springs is batting .346 in the tournament, led by Olsen, who is 9-for-16 (.563) with four RBI, and Ehlen, who is 7-for-15 (.467) with five runs scored.

In two games, Ste. Genevieve pitchers Andrew Basler and Meyer allowed three runs on five hits and had 12 strikeouts in 12 innings.

“They’re stacked,” Messner said of Ste. Genevieve. “That team is built to win a state championship and we’re excited to play them.”
