Ozark Empire Nationals slated

The inaugural Ozark Empire Nationals will be held on Saturday night at Springfield Raceway with 360 winged sprint cars the main attraction.

It’s a clash of the American Sprint Car Series Lucas Oil Sooner Region and the Missouri-based Winged Outlaw Warriors for bragging rights. The event is presented by State Farm Insurance.

Support classes are modified, sport mod, Legends Cars and the Midwest Modz. Those drivers will compete for track points and extra money.

Pit gates open at 3 p.m. and the grandstand at 5. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:15 and racing at 7:15 at the quarter-mile dirt track.

Grandstand admission for adults is $17. A pit pass is $30.

Webb City’s Mitch Keeter won the modified A feature last Saturday night to remain atop the points standings.

Completing the top five in the main event were Erik Maggard of Springfield, Jody Tillman of Branson West, defending champion Jackie Dalton of Carthage and Terry Kirk of Urbana.

“This modified points race could wind up as torrid as last season,” Hoffman said. “I believe Jackie (Dalton) has won four in a row.”

Joplin’s Justin Comer (Legends Cars) and Webb City’s Kaleb Copher (Midwest Modz) were among other main event winners. Comer ironically beat David Bauer of Webb City and Copher beat Bobby Gough of Joplin.

Bob Maggard Sr. (street stock), Sean Williams (sport mod) and Chris Woodruff (pure stock) rounded out the A feature winners.

Monett Speedway

Justin Wells, starting tailback by agreement, didn’t win the late model A feature last Sunday night.

A win by Wells would have been worth an additional $500 from Monett promoter Randy Mooneyham.

Leslie Essary, Crane, drove his dad’s No. 55 race car to the late model victory. Dad, of course, is Ken Essary of Cape Fair.

Wells battled to fourth place. Runner-up was Rex Merritt of Billings, third was Dustin Mooneyham of Aurora and fifth was Darrell Mooneyham (Dustin’s dad) of Aurora.

Dustin Mooneyham, a recent winner at the Humboldt (Kan.) Speedway, and Eric Turner of Hermitage (Mo.) have kept Wells from sweeping this season on the Race Brothers Show-Me Racin’ Series circuit.

Webb City’s Terry Beckham II won the modified A feature last week at Monett on the 3/8-mile clay track. Beckham also won at the Muskogee (Okla.) Thunderbird Speedway earlier in the week.

Joplin drivers Lennie Coats (rookie) and John Coats (bomber) were among the Monett winner.

Midway Speedway

The Hot Summer Nights special at the Lebanon track will finish at 8 tonight at the 3/8-mile dirt track.

Combined points totals from features Wednesday, Thursday and tonight will determine the winners of $2,000 (factory stock), $1,500 (modified) and $1,000 (street stock).
