A youthful and talented volleyball team at Carl Junction has head coach Sarah Wall thinking in terms of the possibilities and challenges in the upcoming season.
The possibilities begin with a squad that has just one senior but was successful playing against top competition during the summer. The challenges include a schedule loaded with matches against larger schools.
“The thing that’s encouraging is it’s the youngest team we’ve had,” Wall said. “Our kids are young, but they don’t play like they’re young. They’ve had such a good summer. We’re looking for great things out of those girls.”
The start of formal practice this week for a season that begins Aug. 28 at Joplin has convinced Wall that her players are well prepared for the level of competition they will face.
“It’s great. The last two days have our coaching staff excited,” she said. “This is the farthest along we’ve ever been in practice.”
The early-season schedule for the Class 3 Bulldogs includes nonconference opponents Joplin, Carthage, Neosho, Ozark and Republic. All compete in Class 4. The schedule also includes Bentonville and Shiloh Christian, two large schools in Northwest Arkansas.
“We’re going to have the toughest schedule we’ve ever had, no doubt, no doubt,” Wall said. “We have some of the best teams in the state. It makes us work that much harder to make sure we don’t take a step backward. The thing is, our kids can’t relax.
“We’re not looking past the Joplin match. Our kids love the competition,” she said. “That’s a friendly rivalry now. We have a lot of respect for their program and what coach (Traci) Saunders is doing.”
