Racing roundup: Mini stock special set for Nevada

— A mini stock special will highlight tonight’s stock car racing program at the Nevada Speedway.

Gates open at 6:30 with racing at 8 on the 1/4-mile dirt oval. Admission prices are $12 and $6. A pit pass is $30.

The top two drivers in the mini stock A feature last week were Osceole drivers J.R. Leiber and Larry Drake. Jason Agee, Bronaugh, placed third.

Bronaugh’s Kevin Morrow beat El Dorado Springs’ Lucas Dobbs in winning the USRA modified A feature.

Kansas drivers rounded out the main event winners: Prescott’s Jerry Brown (USRA B modified), Fort Scott’s Tim Phillips (factory stock) and Fort Scott’s Tiny Joles (pure stock).

Gregg Piotrowski, Galena, Kan., finished runner-up to Brown.

Ryan Gustin triumphs

GRAIN VALLEY, Mo. — Gustin, Marshalltown, Iowa, won the main event as the United States Modified Series’ Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup opened Thursday night at Valley Speedway.

Gustin, defending USMTS national champion, led all 40 laps and earned $3,000.

Springfield’s Terry Phillips, who started sixth, finished second on Thursday night to pocket $1,700.

It was the 60th career USMTS win for the 21-year-old Gustin.

Jason Hughes, Watts, Okla., and Jeremy Payne, Springfield, were fourth and 10th, respectively.

Chanute drivers John Allen and Paden Phillips were 19th and 22nd in the field of 26 race cars.
