Nevada's home runs too much for Outlaws

NEVADA, Mo. — Nevada, boosted by two solo home runs, beat the Joplin Outlaws 5-2 in a MINK League South Division baseball game on Monday night at Lyons Stadium.

The teams clash at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Pittsburg in the Tyler Jeck Memorial.

The Griffons’ J.D. Hamer, who worked the first six innings, and relievers Cody Faulkner and Mitch Weis scattered seven Joplin hits (all by different players).

The right-handed Hamer allowed the runs — both earned — six hits, walked two and struck out seven. Faulkner, a left-hander, pitched the seventh before the right-handed Weis finished for the save. Weis secured three ground balls in a perfect ninth.

Griffons Matt Hilston and Michael Douglas rapped the solo homers in the first and eighth innings, respectively. Each player finished with two hits.

South Division leader Nevada improved to 19-9 overall and 17-9 in the MINK. The Griffons lead Sedalia (a winner at Clarinda on Monday night) by two games. Joplin is 11-15, 9-15.
