Game starts late after official foulup

Missouri Southern’s women’s basketball game against Lindenwood began 45 minutes late on Wednesday night.

The reason? There was confusion with the MIAA in assigning officials for the game.

As MSSU athletic media relations director Justin Maskus was making game preparations, he noticed the women’s game was not on the MIAA’s master schedule. He contacted the league office to get the list of officials, and the league said the game was not on the schedule. The league, however, had the men’s game on the schedule.

So at approximately 4:15 p.m. — 75 minutes before the scheduled tipoff — the league began looking for officials in the Joplin area. Devin Tourtillot from Carl Junction and Ty Bills from Willard were contacted and hired to work the game as a two-man crew.

As each official arrived on the court, the crowd greeted them with a small Bronx cheer. The officials, however, were the solution, not the problem.
