Balanced attack gives Joplin tournament win

CHANUTE, Kan. — The Joplin Eagles boys basketball team bounced back from a first-round loss by defeating Goddard 63-42 during the Ralph Miller Classic on Friday at Chanute High School.

“We came out and played hard from the get-go,” Joplin coach Jeff Williams said. “We didn’t allow our opponent to have any surges. We went to our halfcourt trap, and I think that helped us. We were really consistent. We responded really well from the loss.”

Joplin (10-4) advances to the tournament’s fifth-place game at 3:45 p.m. today.

Senior guard Charlie Brown led the Eagles with 18 points. Deiondre Adams scored 12, and Spencer Layne added 8. Jace Braker and Carlos Santillan contributed seven points each, giving Joplin another balanced attack.

“That’s very pleasing,” Williams said. “We’re going to have to continue to do that. When we run and get going, we can get a lot of guys involved.”

Joplin led 34-25 at halftime and then pulled away by outscoring Goddard 29-17 in the second half.

Goddard was led by Tucker Vang with 15 points.
