Satterlee's 18 lead Carl Junction past Carthage

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Dustin Satterlee’s 3-pointer highlighted a 9-2 run in the fourth quarter as Carl Junction defeated Carthage 52-45 Monday night in a nonconference game.

Satterlee, a 6-foot senior guard, led the Bulldogs with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. Matt Magee, a 6-foot senior, scored 11 of his 15 points in the first half as the Bulldogs built a 28-22 halftime lead.

Carl Junction led by as many as 10 points in the first half and by 13 points late in the third quarter, but both times Carthage was able to close the gap. The Tigers trailed 46-40 midway through the fourth quarter.

“We didn’t play with a lot of energy,” said Carl Junction head coach Kyle Williams. “It was kind of a trap game because we had a snow day and we have a big conference game (tonight) at home against Lamar.

“We executed down the stretch,” he said. “Credit Carthage. Their kids played really hard.”

Anthony Turk, a 6-foot senior guard, led Carthage with 11 points, including two 3-pointers. D’Angelo Poole and Cole Orscheln each scored eight points.

Carthage led most of the first quarter with the help of 3-pointers by Orscheln and Turk, but Carl Junction took the lead for good 13-12 on a three-point play by Gaige Crockett.

The Bulldogs’ largest lead of the first half, 24-14, came on another three-point play, this time by Braydon Allen, off an assist by Magee.

Trailing 42-29 late in the third quarter, Carthage went on a 9-0 run, including a 3-pointer by Orscheln at the start of the fourth quarter that brought the Tigers to within 42-38, but Carthage had just one field goal over the next seven minutes.

“We got ourselves into some bad spots,” said Carthage head coach Steve Ray. “When we took good shots, at least it allowed us to set our defense. I thought we played a little panicky.”

Carl Junction (12-7, 3-0 Big 8) will play Lamar at 7:30 p.m. today at Carl Junction, while Carthage (7-13) will play at 7:30 p.m. today at Nixa.
