Joplin boys drop road game to McDonald County

Girls also beaten away from home

ANDERSON, Mo. — Daton Aubrey, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, scored 28 points to lead the McDonald County boys past Joplin 59-44 in a nonconference prep basketball game on Monday night.

Aubrey tallied 10 points in the first quarter as the Mustangs took an 18-10 ;lead. It was 33-24 at the half.

Said Joplin coach Jeff Williams: “Aubrey is a well-rounded player. He shot the ball very well.

“We had trouble scoring,” Williams said. “Their zone defense was very effective.

“Our defense wasn’t strong, either,” Williams said. “We simply did not play well.”

Drew Harmon and Jake Wood combined for 16 points to support Aubrey.

The Eagles, who entertain Hillcrest tonight in the Ozark Conference, received 19 points from Charlie Brown. Keiondre Adams added 10.

Hillcrest girls 75, Joplin 47

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A 26-point second quarter, making it 42-19 at the half, spiced the Hornets’ Ozark Conference win.

Kelsie Cleeton paced Hillcrest in scoring with 22. Brittany Fisher and Kelbi Painter each added 15.

Joplin’s leaders were Bailey Taylor (18) and Kelsey Johnson (10). Johnson sank two treys.

Joplin continues in the Ozark Conference on Thursday night by playing host to Kickapoo in Young Gymnasium at Missouri Southern State University.

Freshman guard Lexi Sohosky is expected to return from the injury list for Joplin.
