Lions, Gorillas garner MIAA honors

Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State were well represented when the MIAA announced its women’s basketball regular season awards on Monday.

Lane Lord, whose Gorillas are on a 12-game win streak going into the MIAA Postseason Tournament, was named the conference’s Coach of the Year. PSU’s Lizzy Jeronimus was a unanimous first team All-MIAA selection, and Southern’s Dominique Mosley joined her on the conference’s first team.

Jeronimus was the second-best scorer in the league, averaging 18.8 points per game. Mosley was sixth in scoring at 15.3. Mosley narrowly missed a top 10 spot in rebounding, finishing No. 11 with 7.2 rebounds per game.

Central Missouri’s Keuna Flax was named MIAA Player of the Year. She led the league in scoring with 20.3 points per game. Flax also finished seventh in the conference in rebounding, grabbing 7.8 boards per game.

Pitt State also had representatives on the MIAA’s third and all-defensive teams. Sophomore Cathy Brugman earned third team honors while senior guard Y’Cedria Devers cracked the all-defense squad.

Three Lions received honorable mention status as well. Sophomore forward Sharese Jones, junior guard Alexis Fitzpatrick and senior center Shonte Clay were all named honorable mentions for Southern, as were Alexa Bordewick and Antqunita Reed for Pittsburg State.

Jones and Clay finished fourth and fifth in field goal percentage, respectively. Jones shot 55 percent with Clay just behind at 54 percent from the field.

To round out the MIAA’s individual regular season awards, junior center Kate Lehman of Fort Hays State was named Defensive Player of the Year and Lindenwood’s Kassidy Gengenbacher earned honors as the league’s Freshman of the Year.

Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern return to action on Thursday as both teams earned automatic berths to the MIAA Tournament at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City. At 2:15 p.m., Southern will play Fort Hays State. At 8:15, the Gorillas will take on Southwest Baptist.
