Carthage set to host American Legion Junior Regional

Seven teams representing four states will compete in the American Legion Junior Regional baseball tournament this week at Carl Lewton Stadium.

The tournament begins today with three first-round games. The runner-up in the Minnesota state tournament will face the South Dakota champion at 11 a.m., followed by Missouri champion Ste. Genevieve Post 150 vs. the Minnesota champion at 1:30 p.m. and Kansas champion Paola Post 156 vs. the South Dakota runner-up at 4 p.m.

Teams in the tournament include Eden Prairie and Minnetonka from Minnesota and Watertown and Sioux Falls West from South Dakota.

The tournament will continue through Sunday with the championship game scheduled for 1:30 p.m., followed by a second game, if necessary.

The host team, Carthage, drew a bye because the team representing North Dakota was unable to make the trip, said Carthage head coach Jason McVey, who is the tournament director.

Carthage’s first game will be against the winner of the game between Ste. Genevieve and the Minnesota champion at 4 p.m. Thursday.

The National Weather Service office at Springfield estimated four to eight inches of rain drenched the area Monday night and Tuesday morning. The tarp that covered the infield was removed Tuesday afternoon, McVey said.

“We’re good to go. We’ll be ready for the first game,” McVey said.

“The boys are excited. It’s a great experience being able to play teams further away from us,” he said. “Really, we’re going into it wanting to get a win. It’s something these kids, I hope, will take advantage of.”
