Nine local and area teams are entered in the USSSA 13-under AA baseball state championship that begins today at the Bassman Softball Complex fields inside the Joplin Athletic Complex.
This is the first state championship to be played at the Bassman Complex since it opened in March 2012. USSSA and KC Sports Tournaments are hosting the event in cooperation with the Joplin Sports Authority and the Joplin Parks and Recreation Department.
The tournament has attracted 29 teams, and they will play a total of 57 games during the next four days, capped by the championship contest at 11:45 a.m. Sunday.
Games begin at 9:30 a.m. today at all four fields inside the Bassman Complex. Action will start at 8:30 Friday morning and 9:30 both Saturday and Sunday.
The top 16 teams advance to championship bracket play on Saturday. Semifinals are set for 9:30 Sunday morning, and those winners advance to the championship game.
Games are seven innings, and there is a 1 hour, 45 minute time limit except for the championship game.
Teams from southwest Missouri include the Joplin Miners, 417 Wolf Pac of Joplin, Neosho Wildcats, Southwest Missouri Comets from Webb City, Carthage Crushers, Aurora Redbirds, Southwest Cardinals of Stockton, Southwest Rookies from Webb City and the Purdy Shock.
The first game for those teams today:
9:30 a.m.—Purdy Shock vs. Liberty Carstar Vipers; Southwest Rookies vs. Warrensburg Bulldogs; Aurora Redbirds vs. Higginsville Talons; Southwest Cardinals vs. Lee’s Summit SS Cowboys.
5:30 p.m.—Joplin Miners vs. Springfield The Tribe; Southwest Missouri Comets vs. Springfield Tribe Braves; Neosho Wildcats vs. Jefferson City Mid Mo Elite.
7:30—Carthage Crushers vs. Oak Grove Heat Black; 417 Wolf Pak vs. Jefferson City Mid Mo Elite.
