Winged sprint cars scheduled at Monett

— The winged sprint cars from the Oil Capital Racing Series tonight will make their only appearance of the season at the Monett Speedway.

The 7:30 p.m. program at the 3/8-mile clay track will offer stock car racing in four classes — modified, B modified, pure stock and pro-4.

Ticket prices for the special are $15 and $5 (ages 12-15). Pit passes are $30.

The performance last summer at Monett by the Oklahoma-based OCRS might be difficult to beat, Monett Speedway owner/promoter Randy Mooneyham said Thursday.

“They put on a good show last year, for sure,” Mooneyham said. “The main event had some side-by-side racing at the finish. Hopefully, we’ll have more of the same.”

Whit Gastineau, Moore, Okla., won the 25-lap main event by passing Danny Smith, Sapulpa, on the last lap.

Points leaders in the OCRS are Harli White, 582; Brian McClelland, 518; Smith, 474; Kade Morton, 456, and Kyle Clark, 401.

McClelland earned his first A feature victory of the season in the series at the expense of White last Saturday night in a non-wing event at West Siloam Springs Speedway.

The USRA modified class is returning at Monett after a week off, Mooneyham said.

Last week’s main event winners were Rex Merritt (USRA B modified), Josh Essary (factory stock), Brandon Morton (DLRA late model), Austin Powell (pure stock) and Russell Niehoff (pro-4).

Merritt, in a 23-car main event, defeated Jerry Hoffman of Oronogo and Toby Thompson of Mountain Grove. Morton, Broken Arrow, Okla., bested Justin Wells (Aurora) and Ken Essary (Cape Fair) in the late model A feature.

Said Mooneyham: “I thought things really went well last week. Times are tough. People liked the discount prices (admission and some concessions). We had a good turnout of race cars and fans.”

Track points leaders at Monett include Josh Essary, Niehoff and Thompson. Also, Ken Essary is No. 1 in late model, Mitch Keeter first in modified and John Beard No. 1 in pure stock.
