The Joplin Outlaws came from behind in both games and swept a MINK League doubleheader from Clarinda (Iowa) 5-4 and 8-6 Monday night at Wendell Redden Field at the Joplin Athletic Complex.
Koby Chadick’s two-out, ninth-inning single through the middle of the infield scored Jimmy Obermark with the winning run in the first game.
In the second game, the Outlaws took the lead with a three-run fourth inning that featured back-to-back RBI singles by Zack Steadman and Justin Treece, followed by Ben Smith’s run-scoring double.
Steadman, who batted leadoff, was 4-for-9 in the two games with two RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base. Second baseman Justin Treece batted second and was 4-for-8, scored three runs and had two RBIs.
The two teams face one another again at 7 p.m. today at the athletic complex. Hot dogs will be on sale for 25 cents.
The Outlaws took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the first game on back-to-back doubles by Treece and Ben Smith and a sacrifice fly by Taylor Eaves.
Clarinda tied the game with two runs in the third inning on a double steal and a two-out RBI single by Zack Reding, then took a 3-2 lead with a run in the eighth on a two-out RBI single by Demarco Poindexter.
The Outlaws tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Koby Chadick’s double scored Treece, who had reach on an error.
After Clarinda took a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth on Ryan Bilouesky’s sacrifice fly, the Outlaws began their ninth-inning rally with a one-out single by Kyle Dickens.
Obermark reached on a two-base error, and Steadman drove in Dickens with an infield single. Chadick’s ground ball over second base scored Obermark with the winning run. Eddie Smith, who entered the game in the eighth inning, was the winning pitcher.
In the second game, Clarinda scored five runs in the first inning highlighted by two-run doubles by Matt Sinclair and Jason Moralez.
The Outlaws responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning, including a three-run double by designated hitter Sam Ryan, and tied the game in the second inning on a double by Patrick Drake and Treece’s two-out RBI single.
Clarinda regained the lead 6-5 in the third inning on consecutive doubles by Zack Reding and Moralez.
Kaleb Clark, who relieved starting pitcher Nick Martinez in the fourth inning, picked up the win. He allowed one hit in three innings, walked three and struck out five.
