Bird on verge of another City title

— The race appears to be for second place as the Greater Joplin Women’s Golf Association City Championship concludes today.

Natalie Bird, who won the previous two years by 12-stroke margins, owns a 16-shot cushion entering today’s final round at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club. Tee times begin at 12:15 p.m.

Bird, from Carl Junction and a member of Missouri Western’s golf team, posted a 75 at Briarbrook Golf Course and 77 at Schifferdecker Municipal Golf Course last weekend for a 152 total.

Past champion Leigh Ann Hackney is second at 168, and Kerry Helton is next at 172.

Missy Little and Jo Poyzer share fourth place at 173, two shots in front of Deb McFarland.

The tournament’s low net division ended with last weekend’s 36 holes.

Betty Moss shot a net 63 at Briarbrook and net 66 at Schifferdecker for a 139 total and a seven-shot victory over Jan Rose, who shot 74-72.

Cheryl Barley took third place with 69-81—150, followed by Barb Schmidt with 80-82—162 and Dee Kassab with 93-72—165.
