Miners improve to 17-4

GROVE, Okla. — The Joplin Miners, rapping 26 hits, improved their American Legion baseball record to 17-4 by sweeping Grove 16-6 and 14-1 in five-inning games on Tuesday night.

Right-handers Caleb Garton and Colton Johnson were the winning pitchers for the Miners, who visit Webb City Post 322 at 6 p.m. today at Barnes Field. Blake Brown, also a right-hander, also tossed a inning for Joplin in the first contest,

Josh Miller’s three-run homer keyed a nine-run second inning for Joplin in the first game.

Johnson and Gavin Jones each had three hits and Chris Leonardi a pair. Johnson had four RBI and Johnny Maturino a pair to back Miller.

Brown, Leonardi and Brett Graham each had three hits in Game 2. Tyson Hardee and Gavin Williamson had two apiece. Graham and Brown each had three RBI to back the pitching of Johnson.
