WEST PLAINS, Mo. —
Joplin scored three goals in the first 20 minutes and defeated West Plains 6-0 in an Ozark Conference soccer match Tuesday.
Jonathon Ponce’s first of two goals gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead 20 minutes into the game, and his second goal early in the second half put the Eagles in front 4-0.
Joplin outshot West Plains 20-4 as Eagles goalkeeper Brock Renken and the defense recorded their 14th shutout.
Joplin, 17-1-1 overall and 8-0 in the conference, quickly took a 2-0 lead in the first eight minutes on goals by Ryan Estus and Garrett Ward. Ford, who assisted Estus’ goal and Ponce’s first goal, scored on a penalty kick in the second half.
Luis Santillan, who scored Joplin’s sixth goal, assisted Ponce’s second goal. Estus picked up an assist on Ward’s goal in the first half.
Aurora 5, Thomas Jefferson 0
AURORA, Mo. — Dylan Castro had four goals as the Houn ‘Dawgs hiked their record to 3-11.
Castro, a sophomore striker, had three goals in the first half to key a 4-0 advantage for Aurora.
Berto Morfin also scored for Aurora. Ivan Castillo and Tristan Swaim had assists.
Branson 4, Webb City 0
WEBB CITY, Mo. — The Pirates scored twice in each half of the COC Large Division contest.
Branson owned a 21-5 advantage in shots, including 9-1 in shots on goal. Cardinals goalkeeper River Rons made four saves.

Sectional Tournaments
It wasn’t a good Tuesday overall for local girls tennis players in the MSHSAA sectional round for individuals.
Rain forced postponement of part of the Class 1 competition at Warrensburg.
Thomas Jefferson’s Ophelia Chen, seeking a second straight trip to state, is leading Lamar’s Taylor Clements 6-5 in the first set. It will pick up at 1:30 p.m. today at the Millennium Tennis and Fitness Club in Joplin.
Class 2 Joplin’s doubles team of Paula Lanta and Laela Zaidi lost 6-2, 6-1 to Kickapoo’s Shelbee Neal and Meghan Zengel at Republic.
Webb City’s Maranda Miller lost 6-1, 6-1 to Branson’s Taylor Johnston at Republic.
Carl Junction’s Emily Cook and Clinton’s Sarah Cook will finish their singles match today at Warrensburg, according to Thomas Jefferson coach Tom Brumfield.
The Carl Junction doubles team of Kenzie Kuykendall and Madison Adrian lost 6-2, 6-0 to Warrensburg’s Alyssa Parsells and Mckayla Wells.
Mount Vernon’s Paige McCoy-Emily Fenton lost 6-1, 6-2 to Harrisonville’s Cassandra Long-Mallory Sturdevant.
Joplin’s Lanta-Zaidi finished 22-4.
Said Joplin coach Sean McWilliams: “They (Neal and Zengel) outplayed us today. We came out a little slow, and Kickapoo looked really good, better than the final time we played them.
“They (Lanta and Zaidi) had one of the best doubles seasons that Joplin has recorded,” McWilliams said. “I’m proud of the girls. They came up short today against a really good team.”
Volleyball
College Heights beats Purdy
The Cougars raised their record to 12-6-4 by beating visiting Purdy 25-16, 25-17 Tuesday night.
CHC leaders included Sarah Vainio with six kills, Athen Taylor with 22 assists, Kirsty Green with eight digs, Hannah Fuller with seven points and Kayte Peters with three aces and two blocks.
The Cougars play Saturday in the McDonald County Tournament.
Willard beats Cardinals
WEBB CITY, Mo. — Powerful Willard handed Webb City a 25-18, 25-14 loss in the Central Ozark Conference Large Division.
Jessi Heuertz had five kills and seven assists for Webb City, Lenee Gibson added five digs and MacKenzie Lewis had five kills.
Willard, 26-3-1 overall, dropped the Cardinals to 10-17-1, 1-3.
