LIBERAL, Mo. —
Liberal defeated McAuley Catholic 42-29 in a girls prep basketball opener on Tuesday night.
The boys varsity teams met to conclude the tripleheader.
Liberal’s girls were keyed by an 11-2 scoring advantage in the third quarter.
Liberal received 12 points from 5-9 junior Rachel Dugan and nine from 5-3 classmate Nicole Sprenkle. Those players are veterans from a 24-5 edition.
Said Liberal coach Brandi Goodell: “Maybe our defensive pressure was the difference. We could have nailed the victory down quicker by hitting our free throws. We were 6 of 23 from the foul line to their 8 of 14.”
Kambry Wagner, a 5-8 junior, paced Greg Wilks’ Warriors in scoring with seven. McAuley trailed 20-15 at the half.
