Brandon Williams, senior defensive tackle at Missouri Southern, has accepted an invitation to play in the Senior Bowl next month.
The game will be played on Jan. 26, 2013, in Mobile, Ala. So far Williams is the only Division II player to receive an invitation.
Williams has been invited to play in other bowl games, including the BSN Collegiate Showcase and the USA Freedom Bowl in Virginia (formerly the Cactus Bowl, the D-2 all-star game). He also was invited to play in the Casino del Sol game in Tucson, Ariz., the College Football All-Star Classic in Montgomery, Ala., and the Texas vs. the Nation game.
“I think a big thanks needs to go out to all of the bowl games for recognizing talent in Brandon like they have,” Lions coach Daryl Daye said in a release.
“I’d like to personally thank Phil Savage and the Senior Bowl for not only inviting Brandon but showing interest in the great players that make up Division II football and making sure the quality of football at this level isn’t overlooked. He and his staff went the extra step this year.”
Williams, the Lions’ career leader in quarterback sacks, was named Division II defensive player of the year on Wednesday by Beyond Sports Network. He also was the defensive player of the year in the MIAA, selected by the league’s coaches, and the all-Central Region team, determined by a vote of sports information directors.
