Lions, Gorillas named to all-region football team

Two Missouri Southern players and eight members of the Pittsburg State Gorillas were named to the NCAA Division II Don Hansen All-Super Region Three football team.

Junior running back Chris Barnwell and senior linebacker Gatlin Ridgway represent the Lions, who finished 7-3 in 2013.

Pittsburg State’s honorees were senior wide receiver John Brown, senior linebacker Nate Dreiling, sophomore running back Jeff Seybold Jr., senior offensive lineman Cody Holland, sophomore defensive lineman Taye Irvin, junior linebacker Tyler Disney, senior defensive end Joe Uzzel and junior safety Keeston Terry.

Barnwell earned first-team all-region honors after being named a third-team all-MIAA pick. The junior fullback from Savannah, Ga., led the Lions with 878 rushing yards. Barnwell was sixth in the MIAA in rushing and helped the Lions break school records for rushing yardage (3,684) and rushing touchdowns (42).

Ridgway was named to the third team. The senior linebacker from Danville, Ohio, earned second-team all-MIAA honors after finishing fourth in the conference with 5.5 sacks. Ridgway also led the Lions in tackles with 80 and tackles for loss with 9.5.

Brown received first-team honors as a wide receiver and as a return man. The Homestead, Fla., native caught 61 passes for 1,198 yards and 14 touchdowns. Brown also averaged 32.4 yards and had one touchdown as a kick returner.

Dreiling earned first-team honors after leading the team in tackles with 109. The Hutchinson, Kan., native finished his career with 491 tackles, setting the MIAA record.

Seybold, Holland, Irvin and Disney were named to the second team. Seybold ran for 1,434 yards and 22 touchdowns. Holland, a Neosho native, led a Pittsburg State offensive line that helped the Gorillas scored 46.5 points per game. Irvin recorded 36 tackles with 7.5 for loss. Disney posted 101 tackles and 3.5 sacks.

Uzzel and Terry received third-team accolades. Uzzel had 43 tackles and two sacks. Terry registered 64 tackles, one interception, four pass breakups and two forced fumbles.

Players named to the first and second teams for all-region advance to a national ballot for the 2013 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America team.
