MOUNT VERNON, Mo. —
Rogersville broke a 5-5 tie with a three-run eighth inning Tuesday night and defeated Mount Vernon 8-5 in a Class 3 baseball sectional.
Mount Vernon, 19-11, took a 5-1 lead in the fourth inning on Kyler Shoff’s solo home run, but Rogersville tied the score with a four-run sixth inning.
Mount Vernon jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Kyler Shoff led off with a double and Chase Johnston reached on a bunt single. Shoff scored on a single by Zane Phillips, and Cody Lee’s sacrifice fly drove in Johnston.
Then, with two out, Auston Weldy reached on an error and Skylar Phillips singled before Dominic Swillum doubled in two runs.
“This has been one of the best teams I’ve ever coached,” said Mount Vernon head coach Nick Swillum.
“The kids have just been great kids to be around. I’m proud of the way we fought through the middle of our season and came out district champions in back-to-back years.”
