Pittsburg takes third at Legion tourney

HAYS, Kan. — Pittsburg Post 64 typically would be more than satisfied with scoring 12 runs in a game.

However, 12 runs wasn’t enough in Pittsburg’s final two games of the Kansas AAA American Legion tournament. Post 64 settled for third place, falling 18-12 in 10 innings to Hays on Friday and 18-12 to Newton on Saturday.

“We scored every inning except for the ninth against Newton,” Pittsburg coach Mike Watt said. “The last two games we scored nearly 25 runs and had 40 hits, and we lost both. It was crazy baseball. The hitters were definitely ahead of the pitchers at this time of the year.

“We raised our team batting average 15 or 20 points in the tournament, but it wasn’t enough.”

Post 64 led Hays 7-1 after six innings in Friday but surrendered 11 runs over the next three innings and then gave up six more in the top of the 10th.

Hays defeated Newton 11-8 in the championship.
