Springfield Raceway to start March Madness

— Springfield Raceway opens its stock car racing schedule on Saturday night with its annual March Madness.

.The late model MARS DIRTcar Series will head the five-class program on the quarter-mile track.Starting time is 5:30 p.m.

Support classes are USRA A modified, USRA B modified, Midwest Modz and Legends Cars.

Admission prices are $20 and $5 (ages 6-12). A pit pass is $35. Pit gates open at 2 p.m. and the grandstand at 4. Hot laps are scheduled for 4:45.

The winner of the late model main event will receive $3,000. First place in A modified, B modified, Midwest Modz and Legends Cars will pay $500, $300, $200 and $250, respectively.

It’s the second event of the season for MARS. Riley Hickman, Chattanooga, Tenn., and Brian Shirley, Chatham, Ill., were 1-2 in the A feature on March 17 at Clarksville, Tenn. Justin Asplin, Birch Tree, Mo., placed third.

Top three in MARS points last season were Tony Jackson Jr., Lebanon, 1,624; Jesse Stovall, Billings, Mo., 1,444, and Asplin, 1,192.

Springfield Raceway will hold the B Modified Nationals on April 2-5. The event is sponsored by Liquid Nitro Energy Drink and Reliable Chevrolet.

The A feature winner will pocket $6,600. Making the main event will be worth $1,200.

Regular weekly racing at Springfield Raceway will start April 26.

Monett Speedway

MONETT, Mo. — Officials have scheduled a practice session for all classes on March 28.

The opener on April 4 at the 3/8-mile clay track will offer competition in late model, modified, factory stock, pure stock, pro-4 and Legends Cars.

Terry Phillips update

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Phillips, scheduled to compete in March Madness at Springfield Raceway, earned $5,000 on Jan. 26 by winning a National Dirt Racing League event at El Paso, Texas.

Phillips beat Kent Robinson of Bloomington, Ind. Billy Moyer, Batesville, Ark., finished third and Billy Moyer Jr. was sixth.

Phillips emphasized the United States Modified Touring Series in February.

He had six finishes in the top 10 with two fourths and a third.
