MSSU softball drops two

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — NCAA Division II’s fifth-ranked Augustana (S.D.) needed an RBI double in the seventh inning to defeat Missouri Southern.

The Lions softball team fell 6-5 to Augustana before falling 5-2 to Minnesota State Mankato during the Missouri Western Invitational on Friday at Heritage Park.

Missouri Southern (8-18) took a 5-3 advantage as Chloe Brown hit a grand slam in the fourth inning against Augustana (14-2). The Vikings tied the game 5-5 by adding one run each in the fourth and fifth innings.

Jenelle Trautmann earned the game-winning hit for Augustana with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh.

Shelby Mitchell, Sarah Williams and Haley Kinnison each pitched against Augustana with Kinnison receiving the loss.

Minnesota State Mankato (12-6) took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning of the second game after a three-run double by Ashley Thell. The Lions answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth as Michala Wood and Dawn Grass each had an RBI.

Mankato added runs in the sixth and seventh to go up 5-2.

Kinnison pitched all seven innings, allowing only two earned runs.

Missouri Southern combined for seven runs and 16 hits on the day.

The Lions were led at the plate by Wood, who went 3-for-7 with a double, run and an RBI. Shelby Romines, Brooklyn Farrell, Alana Hester and Chloe Brown finished the day with two hits each.

Missouri Southern continues play at the Missouri Western Invitational today. The Lions face Central Missouri (12-10) at 1 p.m. before facing Concordia St. Paul (4-12) at 3 p.m.
