Mules sweep Lions baseball

WARRENSBURG, Mo. — The Central Missouri Mules produced 19 hits in a sweep of the Missouri Southern Lions on Friday at Crane Stadium.

Central Missouri edged the Lions 3-2 in the opener before earning a 6-3 victory in the nightcap.

Missouri Southern (14-10, 9-9 MIAA) has lost 10 of its last 12 games after opening the season with a 12-0 record.

Kevin Graza’s home run in the third inning gave Central Missouri (16-9, 13-5) a 2-0 lead in the opener. The Lions responded in the top of the fourth with an RBI single from Brandon Weller that scored Mitchell Osborn.

The Mules regained their two-run lead in the bottom of the fourth when Dusty Maas belted an RBI double to center field.

Logan Moon’s RBI triple helped Missouri Southern cut the Mules’ lead to 3-2 in the top of the sixth.

However, Central Missouri closer Zach Davis earned his third save of the season by recording the final five outs.

Ryan Bates pitched efficiently in the loss for Missouri Southern. He scattered eight hits, while striking out two and walking none.

Moon led the Lions at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance.

Missouri Southern jumped out a lead in the top of the first of the second game when Moon knocked in Jared Lupo.

Evin Natick later scored on an unearned run to give the Lions a 2-1 lead.

Central Missouri scored two runs each in the second and third innings to pull away with a 5-2 lead. Central Missouri scored another run in the fifth. Missouri Southern’s Dusty Harper hit a home run in the sixth inning.

Payton Walker recorded the loss, allowing three earned runs and eight hits over three innings. Kanon Hoover, Stephen Vaughn, Jacob Lux and Josh Engler all pitched in relief.

Missouri Southern will play two more today at Central Missouri, starting at noon.
