Two gifts received for MSSU baseball stadium

Rod and Janice Anderson of Monett and Don and Christy Swanson of Joplin have made gifts to the Missouri Southern Foundation for the baseball facility that is being built on campus, school officials announced Tuesday.

The Andersons made a $25,000 gift, and a suite at the stadium will be named in honor of the Board of Governors.

Rod Anderson, an MSSU graduate, was appointed to the Board of Governors in September 2003. He served as vice chairman from 2009-10, and then he served two terms as chairman.

“I’ve always been passionate about the student-athletes at Missouri Southern, and we thought this was as great opportunity to help them and to bring a new facility to campus,” Anderson said in a press release.

The Swansons made a $10,000 gift, and they will have home stands named in their honor. Don also is an MSSU alum and has been a member of  the MSSU Foundation Board of Directors since 2011.

“We routinely support the university in a variety of areas,” he said. “We decided to direct our support toward this campaign right now because we feel sports provide important life lessons, and we’re excited about the new facility.”

The fundraising campaign is a collaboration among the school, the MSSU Baseball Advisory Committee and the Missouri Southern Foundation.

“We’re thankful for these generous gifts,” said JoAnn Graffam, executive director of the Foundation. “They are going to make the new stadium a reality for the campus and the community, and we couldn’t do it without them.”

The stadium will be located east of the football stadium and adjacent to the softball complex. It will have state-of-the-art synthetic turf in the infield and outfield, lights and seating for 500 plus an outfield viewing deck.

Last October, the school announced that approximately half of the funds for the stadium had been raised.

Lead donors named at that time were the Robert W. Plaster Foundation, Snyder Construction Company, Hiland Dairy, Joplin Building Material, longtime MSSU baseball supporter Larry Hickey, friends and family of the late Dr. Patrick Thompson (the press box will be named in his honor), Southwest Missouri Bank (sponsor of the outfield viewing deck) and an anonymous donor who named the batting cage in honor of the late Lions assistant coach Mike Hagedorn.

Persons wanting to make contributions to the campaign can contact the MSSU Foundation, 417-625-9396.
