Eagles finish second behind Jenks in tennis invitational

Jenks again repeated as the team champion in the Joplin Invitational boys tennis tournament on Wednesday at the Joplin Athletic Complex.

Jenks blanked the host Eagles 9-0 in the championship round, but there were some close matches at the top of the ladder.

Mitchell Worley of Jenks beat Luke Frogge at No. 1 singles and Bennett Hughes downed Edran Alil at No. 2 singles by identical 9-7 scores. Then at No. 1 doubles, Frogge-Ali lost to Worley-John Tonjelli 9-8, dropping the tiebreaker 8-6.

In pool play matches, the Eagles beat Springfield Central 7-2 and North Kansas City 8-1. Jenks defeated Liberty North and Thomas Jefferson in its pool.

Liberty North topped Central 7-2 for third place honors, and North Kansas City downed Thomas Jefferson 6-3 for fifth place.

Seven of Joplin’s nine entries posted 2-1 records in the tournament — Frogge, Ali, Sam Wilcoson at No. 3 singles, Duncan Ford at No. 4 singles, Kilty O’Connor-Box at No. 5 singles, Frogge-Ali and O’Connor-Box—Colton Hill at No. 3 doubles.

The Eagles have a match against Glendale today in Springfield.
