ROLLA, Mo. —
Dig up all those cliches — such as “biggest win in years” — for the Joplin High School soccer team.
It really was the Eagles’ biggest win in years.
Joplin earned a share of the Ozark Conference title by beating Rolla 3-0 on Tuesday.
The Eagles (19-3-2, 8-1) resume at 4:30 p.m. next Tuesday as the No. 1 seed in the Class 3 District 12 Tournament at Harrison Stadium in Springfield.
Coaches Ed Miller and Thomas MacQueeney savored the win perhaps as much as the players.
Said Miller: “I believe we’d been in this position previously three times in my 12 years (as head coach). Our goal always has been a get a banner to hang up. This is our first championship — outright or shared — since 1993.”
The Eagles scored their goals in the first half — Jonathan Ponce (assisted by Luis Santillan) at 3:00, Joseph Rice at 4:00 and Colton Maggard at 35:00.
Brock Renken had six saves, according to Joplin statistics.
Said MacQueeney: “Brock, our goalie, made some clutch saves. Our starting defense continued to be solid. I believe that’s at least 15 shutouts. We had great team play.”
Cards blank Republic
WEBB CITY, Mo. — Alex Christian scored two goals and Webb City defeated Republic 4-0 in its final Central Ozark Conference Large Division match of the season.
Jimmy Campbell, along with Christian, scored in the first half as the Cardinals took a 2-0 halftime lead. Evan Moss and Christian scored in the second half.
Webb City, which outshot Republic 11-6, plays Willard at noon Saturday in the first round of the district tournament at Drury University in Springfield.
