Webb City girls advance to state championship game

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Webb City held on to beat Smithville 54-53 Thursday night in a Class 4 girls basketball semifinal game at Mizzou Arena.

The Cardinals advance to play undefeated Incarnate Word in the championship game at 4:50 p.m. Saturday. Incarnate Word downed Dexter 66-25 in the first semifinal.

Kaitlin Beason’s two free throws with 16 seconds left gave the Cardinals a 54-50 lead. But Smithville came back with a three-point play, then stole the ball with 4.8 seconds left. Smithville, however, missed its final shot.

Guard Mikaela Burgess hit four 3-point goals and fired in 23 points to lead the Cardinals. Desirea Buerge chipped in with 13 points, and Casey Heger tallied 10.
