KIRKSVILLE, Mo. —
Andrea Klipsch’s one-out double in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Cory Niblett with the winning run Friday as Truman State defeated Missouri Southern 4-3 and completed a sweep of an MIAA doubleheader.
Truman State scored four runs in the third inning of the first game and defeated the Lions 9-3.
Missouri Southern (15-13, 2-4 MIAA) tied the score 3-3 with a run in the seventh inning of the first game. Michala Wood led off the inning and reached on a error, was sacrificed to second by Kathryn Goins, advanced to third on a ground ball and scored on an error.
The Lions had taken a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a leadoff double by Rachel Harding, who was sacrificed to third by Brooke Smith and scored on Brooklyn Farrell’s double to left-center field.
After Truman scored three runs in the bottom of the third, the Lions added a run in the fourth when Goins’ two-out double drove in Wood, who was hit by a pitch.
Kindra Henze (3-1), who pitched a four-hit complete game, was the winning pitcher. The Lions’ Haley Kinnison (3-1) allowed six hits, walked three and struck out six.
Truman State (15-5, 3-1) collected 10 hits in the second game, led by designated hitter Liz Leath, who was 3-for-4 with a double and scored two runs.
Trailing 4-1, the Lions scored twice in the fifth on singles by Farrell and Shelby Romines and Kinnison’s two-run double. Kinnison, who was the designated player in the first game, was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
The Lions scored a run in the first inning when Kinnison’s two-out single drove in Alana Hester, who reached base on a missed third strike.
Missouri Southern is scheduled to play a doubleheader at 2 p.m. today at Lindenwood.
