Crowder adds two players for women's basketball

Crowder College added size and quickness with its latest basketball signees, Lady ’Rider coach Tina Robbins said Thursday.

The addition of 6-foot-1 Ariana Gallegos, from Kyle (Texas) Lehman, and 5-6 Tae’lor Monroe, Las Vegas (Nev.) Liberty, hikes the number of 2013 prep graduates to five secured by Crowder.

Crowder is scheduled to return just two players from the 2012-13 roster,  Robbins said, in 5-8 Dorian Briggs of Fort Smith (Ark.) and 6-1 red-shirt Thays Barbosa of Brazil.

Gallegos averaged 13 points, 10 rebounds, 3.5 blocked shots, 2 steals and 3 assists in earning all-district honors. Lehman, near Austin, finished 18-17 under Jamie Coy her senior campaign.

Monroe averaged 6.8 points, 2.6 assists and 2 steals in receiving Sunrise Division honorable mention. The Patriots, coached by Richard Santigate, finished 27-7 and reached the state semifinals in their class.

“Ariana (Gallegos) obviously has size and has athleticism to go with the size,” Robbins said. “She can affect play on both ends of the floor.

“Ariana, a good shot-blocker, can score around the rim or step out and score,” Robbins said. “She runs well.

“Tae’lor (Monroe) is a true point guard,” Robbins said. “She’s unselfish, quick and guards very well. She has the ability to score more. They (Liberty) had two good players on the inside and her job was to get the ball inside.

“We aren’t finished,” Robbins said in regard to recruiting. “We’re waiting to hear back from players (to wrap up paperwork).”
