Colgan set for tough golf state tournament

The St. Mary’s-Colgan Panthers enter today’s Class 3A state golf tournament with realistic expectations.

“It’d be awful hard for us to win it,” Colgan coach Chuck Smith said. “We’ve been consistent all year. I think you have be in the 320s to win the whole thing. I’m not saying we could do that, but it would be tough.”

The Panthers will be competing at Spring Creek Golf Course in Seneca.

Colgan finished second in the CNC and earned a regional championship with a team score of 351 this past week at Crestwood Country Club in Pittsburg.

Colgan’s David Misasi finished third overall with an 80, and Colgan’s Bailey Beyrirch was fifth with an 81.

“David is playing his best golf right now,” Smith said. “Bailey shot an 81 at regionals, but he had a nine on his last hole. If he’s on, he could shoot a 76 or 77.”

The Panthers also will be looking for good rounds from Freddie Elmer, Brandon Emerson, Brock Jameson and Jonah Dellasega.

“Brandon shot a 79 at Baxter,” Smith said. “He is capable of having a good day. Freddie has got the potential to be a really good golfer. He’s just got to be consistent, but the talent is there. I know Jonah can have a good round, and Brock will have his moments, too.

“Hopefully, we’ll have a couple of medalists.”

Columbus’ Dawson Soper will be competing today in the 4A state tournament at Cherry Oaks Golf Course in Cheney.

Soper finished sixth at last week’s regional at Parsons with an 84.
