Miners extend streak to six before falling to Miami

BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — Joplin extended its American Legion baseball winning streak to six before losing to Miami in the round robin Baxter Springs Tournament on Thursday.

Gavin Jones doubled and homered as the Miners, rapping 10 hits, beat Baxter Springs Double A 9-2 at the Field of Dreams.

But Miami Post 147 dropped the Miners to 19-10 overall with a 17-1 win in four innings in the second contest.

The Miners will face Osawatomie at 2:30 p.m. today before meeting Baxter Springs Triple A at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Joplin coach Bobby Stackhouse said right-hander Keith Simpson is today’s probable starting pitcher for the Miners.

Right-handers Johnny Presley, who toiled into the fifth inning — he faced one batter — and Hank Millard limited Baxter Springs AA to five hits. It was Presley’s first starting assignment of the season.

Jones’ second homer of the season was a two-run blow in a four-run second inning. He also scored two runs in the game.

Miami spiced its victory by scoring seven runs in the third inning and six in the fourth. Miami finished with 11 hits.

Post 147 right-hander Matt Walker allowed three Joplin hits — a double by Millard and a single and a double by Jones.
