MOUNT VERNON, Mo. —
Joplin, falling from the unbeaten ranks in District 15 American Legion baseball, split a doubleheader with the Mount Vernon 39ers on Tuesday night.
The 39ers, scoring four runs in the sixth inning to snap a 4-4 tie, won 8-7 in the first game before the Miners, rapping 12 hits, triumphed 12-3.
The split left Joplin 21-12 overall and 7-1 in District 15. The Miners will open play on Thursday in the Pryor (Okla.) Tournament by facing the host at 5:30 p.m. and NOAH at 8.
Mac Roach’s two-run double and a two-out Joplin miscue keyed Mount Vernon’s decisive sixth inning in the opener.
The 39ers received two hits from Roach (both doubles), pitcher Dalton Gulick and Connor Osterloh. The right-handed Gulick struck out 12.
Joplin received two hits and one RBI from Tristan Ash and two hits from Keith Simpson.
Ash doubled and tripled and Josh Miller tripled and homered — a solo blow — for Joplin in Game 2. Brett Graham and Gavin Jones each added two hits and Nate Brummer joined Ash and Miller with two RBI.
The Miners’ Nathan Cox, a right-hander, picked up the pitching decision by working four innings in relief. He allowed just one hit and struck out four.
Mount Vernon received two hits from Kyler Shoff in the second game.
