Softball Lions swept by Western

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — First baseman Tiffany Gillaspie hit a grand slam home run in the second game as Missouri Western defeated Missouri Southern 8-1 and 11-2 in an MIAA doubleheader Sunday at Missouri Western.

Gillaspie was 2-for-3 with a double, scored twice and had five RBIs in the second game, including a grand slam in the third inning.

MSSU, who took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, loaded the bases on walks to Dawn Grass and Shelby Romines and a single up the middle by Replogle. Dru Coleman drove in a run on a fielder’s choice, and the second run scored on a throwing error.

The Griffons (22-14 overall, 7-7 MIAA) answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning and five runs in the third.

Winning pitcher Janie Smith (8-8) allowed four hits in five innings, walked two and struck out two.

Missouri Southern (10-24, 2-8) will play Lindenwood in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lea Kungle Field.

In the first game, MSSU tied the score 1-1 in the fourth inning. Jessica Castoe came in as a pinch runner for Grass, who had walked, and advanced to third on Alexah Replogle’s single to right-center field. Castoe scored on an error when catcher Kathryn Goins hit into a fielder’s choice.

Griffons pitcher Jackie Bishop (14-6) allowed three hits, walked four and struck out eight in seven innings. Alana Hester, Replogle and second baseman Brooke Swadley singled for the Lions.

Morgan Rathmann, a freshman center fielder from Neosho, was 3-for-3 and scored three runs in the doubleheader. She drove in two runs in the first game on two sacrifice bunts.
