Lions try to maintain momentum from sweep

It’s been nearly a week since the Missouri Southern softball team took the field, but the Lions hope the momentum they grabbed that day with a doubleheader sweep will follow them into this weekend.

MSSU hosts 24th-ranked Missouri Western today, starting at 4 p.m., before hosting Northwest Missouri on Saturday at noon.

The Lions are 17-13 overall and 4-4 in MIAA play after sweeping Lindenwood last Saturday.

Missouri Western enters today’s doubleheader on an eight-game winning streak. The Griffons re 20-8 overall and 4-2 in the MIAA. Sarah Elliot is hitting .390, one of seven Griffons hitting over .300. Jackie Bishops leads the Griffon pitching staff with a 10-3 record and 1.80 earned run average.

Northwest Missouri enters the weekend at 15-7 overall and 3-3 in the MIAA. The Bearcats make a stop today at Pittsburg State for a doubleheader before coming to Joplin.

The Bearcats are led by senior second baseman Hailee Hendricks, who is hitting .434 with six doubles and three home runs. Senior outfielder Candace Milers is hitting .391.

Jenna Creger is 7-3 with a 1.38 ERA for the Bearcats.
